The Pittsburgh Steelers' defense is expected to be one of the top units in the 2025 NFL season. Last year, the Steelers gave up 299 rushing yards to the Baltimore Ravens in their playoff loss. That poor defensive performance has stayed with the team. Head Coach Mike Tomlin and General Manager Omar Khan have been busy this offseason finding ways to fix the leaking holes on the defense.

To improve their depth and overall talent, the Steelers made several moves focused on strengthening the defensive lineup. From adding new players to adjusting the roster, Pittsburgh is clearly committed to building a defense that can stop opponents and avoid last season’s mistakes. However, these changes could force some difficult roster decisions as the team balances talent and salary cap concerns.
Steelers insider Mike DeFabo predicted in his article on Wednesday that Mark Robinson is now seriously in danger of being cut. With increased competition for limited spots, the team may have to make a brutal choice when it comes to its inside linebackers. The Steelers are determined to fix their defensive weaknesses, even if it means letting go of some current players.
"The Steelers may have turned their inside linebacker room from a weakness into a strength over the last couple of years," DeFabo said. "Patrick Queen will be the do-everything, three-down linebacker. Payton Wilson, who played primarily in sub packages last year, likely sees his role grow in the base defense. Malik Harrison brings a physical edge as a run-stuffer in the base. So what about Cole Holcomb and Robinson?"
The Steelers' linebacker room, especially the inside linebackers, have become a bright spot for the team. What was once viewed as a weak area is now showing clear improvement.

As DeFabo pointed out, the Steelers have made noticeable efforts to strengthen that group, and the added depth has made a real difference. Because of this depth, DeFabo believes the news is not good for Robinson’s chances of staying on the roster.
"Holcomb has been working on special teams to help his chances," DeFabo said. "That could push Robinson down or off the roster. Rookie Carson Bruener is another candidate to earn a job on special teams, another reason to question Robinson’s spot on the roster."
The improvement in the Steelers’ inside linebacker room reflects the team’s commitment to building a more reliable and dynamic defense. New additions and young players stepping up have created healthy competition, pushing everyone to perform at a higher level. This renewed depth is critical for Pittsburgh as they aim to fix the defensive weaknesses that cost them dearly in the playoffs last season.
Steelers' Mark Robinson Facing Uphill Battle To Secure Roster Spot
Robinson, despite flashes of potential, now faces an uphill battle to secure his spot. With more talented players competing for limited roles, the team is forced to make tough choices. Robinson’s fate will likely depend on how well he can continue to develop and contribute during training camp and preseason games.
The expected return of Cole Holcomb doesn't bode well for Robinson either. However, it is great news for Steeler Nation. In the 2023 season, Holcomb suffered a brutal injury. He has been working hard to recover and should be ready to go in 2025. If he returns to form, that's a major help for this Steelers' defense.

Ultimately, the Steelers are focused on putting together a defense that can consistently pressure opponents and limit big plays. While change can be difficult, these roster moves show the organization’s determination to address past shortcomings and build a unit capable of carrying the team deep into the postseason. Fans should expect a much stronger and more resilient Steelers defense in 2025.
