Steelers' Roman Wilson Gets Critical Update About His Future From Mike McCarthy

The Pittsburgh Steelers drafted wide receiver Roman Wilson in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft. At the time, the team's wide receiver room was in major need of help, and they felt like the Michigan prospect could come in as a rookie and provide immediate, reliable depth. Unfortunately for Wilson, he suffered an early injury in training camp and never quite managed to catch up once he fell behind in a crowded and evolving offense. The shocking part was that the Steelers' offense actually was setup well for him to come in as a rookie and shine.

In his second season, the 2025 campaign, many pundits expected a breakout. With George Pickens no longer in the picture after being traded, and with the Steelers needing production behind DK Metcalf, the opportunity seemed wide open for Wilson to carve out a meaningful role. However, he struggled to see consistent playing time and was unable to establish himself as a regular contributor on the field, leaving questions about his development and long-term fit in the offense. The troubling part for Steelers fans was that Wilson seemed to perform well for the most part every time he got a legitimate chance.

Now with Mike McCarthy at the helm of the Steelers, the focus has shifted to what the future holds for Wilson. Although he was not drafted by McCarthy, the new head coach has the authority to reshape the roster and the receiver hierarchy. Many are left wondering whether Wilson will finally get his chance to prove himself in 2026. Well, McCarthy addressed Wilson directly when speaking to the media and insider Mike DeFabo on Monday, offering insight into how he views the young receiver’s potential and role moving forward.

"New system, fresh start," McCarthy said while speaking about Wilson. "I'm hoping he's one of those guys that would benefit from it. I was impressed talking football with him. There's a lot of people that have a lot of love for him in the building."

Wilson was targeted just 21 times during the 2025 season, hauling in 12 receptions for 166 yards and scoring two touchdowns. The middle of the season was when Wilson saw his most consistent involvement, as most of his production came between Weeks 6 and 12.

Overall, he appeared in only 253 offensive snaps, far fewer than many experts expected heading into the top of the 2025 campaign. As the season progressed, his role began to fade, and he was a healthy scratch for four of the final five games.

Steelers Not Giving Up On Roman Wilson

For a wide receiver projected to contribute more by this stage of his career, the output was not particularly promising. Still, it is important to note that McCarthy has not given up on him. He has expressed confidence that Wilson can still turn a corner and has shown enthusiasm about working with the young wideout moving forward.

Steelers fans are also eager to see how McCarthy utilizes Wilson. Many have pointed to former head coach Mike Tomlin and questioned whether the organization did enough to aid his development. Whether that criticism is fair or not remains up for debate, but one thing is certain. If McCarthy integrates Wilson into his offense and he begins to produce, questions about why he was not playing earlier will only grow louder.

It appears that McCarthy is determined to find out exactly what he has in Wilson, and that sense of opportunity is exciting for Steeler Nation.
