Steelers' Probability To Sign Daniel Jones Over Other Rumored Veteran QBs Is Legitimate: "He'd Be More Likely"

The Pittsburgh Steelers are once again living through the process of being linked to nearly every quarterback in the universe. During the 2024 season, it felt like one of the two they had, Russell Wilson or Justin Fields, would definitely be back. When Wilson was winning games, he seemed like a no-brainer, and then, after his end-of-season slump, Fields and his athleticism became the new favorite.

Steelers' Russell Wilson and Justin Fields talk while they get warmed up for camp.

Team President Art Rooney II told the media they hope to retain one of the two veterans they had in 2024. On top of that, both Wilson and Fields expressed to the media that they wanted to stay in Pittsburgh. However, none of that guarantees that either of them will return.

That has created a rumor frenzy on social media. The Steelers have been linked to Aaron Rodgers, Trevor Lawrence, Matthew Stafford, and Daniel Jones. While the Lawrence rumors seem to have been put to rest, all of the others are still ongoing. Ray Fittipaldo from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette joined The Fan Morning Show on 93.7 The Fan and was asked about all the various outside options. He thinks that Wilson or Fields are still the most likely options, but said only one of the outside guys mentioned really didn't have a shot.

"The Daniel Jones thing, he'd be more likely," said Fittipaldo. "You wouldn't have to sign him for as much. I will say this: if those other two options fall through, then you're probably going to have to go after a guy like Daniel Jones, right? He's mobile, he's got a little bit of experience. He'd be a bridge quarterback. That would be your next option, but I don't think they want to go down that route just now."

Fittipaldo said that he expects the team will announce something in the next couple of weeks. They are currently back in the facility discussing all of their options so they can hone their focus at the NFL Combine and free agency on just areas of need.

The other factor Fittipaldo mentioned is continuity. He had previously talked about Fields possibly wanting to stay in Pittsburgh to have continuity for himself, but Fittipaldo thinks the team will also want continuity. Since Ben Roethlisberger retired, they have been through one quarterback after another, and while Fields might not be the long-term solution, there is at least a chance he could be.

Daniel Jones could be an intriguing option for the 2025 Steelers.

Daniel Jones could be an intriguing option for the 2025 Steelers.

Jones was selected sixth overall by the New York Giants in 2019. He has been on a rollercoaster ride with them ever since. His play has been inconsistent, and he has struggled with injuries. In 2022, the Giants declined Jones' fifth-year option. However, after winning their first playoff game in over a decade, they offered him a four-year $160 million contract. He spent most of 2023 injured and wound up being benched. In November of 2024, he asked to be released and was ultimately signed by the Minnesota Vikings

Now, Jones is a free agent who is looking for a new home. He could fit well in Smith's offense, and his mobility is a bonus. Jones presents an interesting option if the Steelers cannot work out a deal with Wilson or Fields.

Steelers Have To Consider Every Option

One thing that is certain is that the Steelers cannot afford not to explore every option. They must leave no stone unturned in their search for a new quarterback for 2025. That means not stopping at only Wilson and Fields, but also thinking outside the box, like the possible trade for Lawrence or making an offer to Jones. As Mark Kaboly recently pointed out, they are desperate

Regardless, they still need to approach this search constructively. The last time it felt like the team was desperate, they made a reach draft pick for Kenny Pickett. Hopefully, they learned from that lesson.
