Steelers Can't Eliminate Any Quarterback Possibilities During 2025 Offseason: "You're Desperate"

The Pittsburgh Steelers are in quarterback purgatory once again entering the 2025 offseason. After bringing in Russell Wilson and Justin Fields in 2024 for just one year, the team currently has no one on the roster aside from Skylar Thompson. This means the organization is being linked to every quarterback who could even remotely become available, including new rumors that the front office called the Jacksonville Jaguars about Trevor Lawrence

Lawrence hasn't been the only name floated about; fans have also heard Kirk Cousins, Aaron Rodgers and even Matthew Stafford mentioned. The reality, according to longtime Steelers reporter Mark Kaboly from The Pat McAfee Show, is that the sky could literally be the limit.

On his podcast, Kaboly and Mack, he told his co-host, Chris Mack, that if Fields and Wilson both leave the Steel City, then General Manager Omar Khan and Head Coach Mike Tomlin would have to scramble to get someone in place.

"I think everything's on the table at this point," Kaboly explained. "If Fields and Wilson are gone, everybody's on the table. You can't just cross anybody off. You just can't, cause you're desperate."

When the Steelers signed Wilson, they expected Kenny Pickett would spend some time behind the former Super Bowl winner, maturing and growing. However, Pickett was not interested in that plan and requested a trade. That gave the Steelers the chance to trade for Fields. While Fields was expected to take Pickett's place, learning from Wilson, he became the starter to begin the season.

Fields started six games, winning four, and many were surprised when Tomlin chose to sit him for Wilson once the veteran was healthy. However, Wilson came out hot and quickly got the team to 10-3 on the season. That decision and the wins had Tomlin being pegged as a potential Coach of the Year and had the Steelers in the mix as sneaky Super Bowl contenders.

Unfortunately, the team spiraled at the end of the season and lost its final four regular season games and the Wild Card contest against the Baltimore Ravens. That changed everything. Where Wilson once seemed to be locked into re-signing, the media wasn't so sure. It is hard to argue there aren't more possibilities with Fields. He is younger and far more athletic, and that will be a bonus, considering the Steelers' offensive line has struggled to protect its quarterbacks.

The Steelers chose not to offer Fields a longer contract when they traded for him, which could prove to be a detriment. There are many teams that are in the hunt for a solid quarterback, and a former first-round pick will garner a lot of interest. If Fields decides to explore free agency, and why wouldn't he, the Steelers could have to pay top dollar to retain him.

There has been no credible information about which way the team is leaning. Art Rooney II told the media that he would like to retain either Fields or Wilson, but didn't express a preference. This has fans and the media speculating wildly about who it could or should be under center for 2025.

Steelers Will Have Numerous Holes To Fill

The 2024 season revealed that the Steelers are not just a quarterback away from a Super Bowl win. They desperately need to fill other holes on the team. Those holes include not just the lack of a wide receiver two, but also pieces on the defensive line and at running back.

Depending on how free agency goes, there might be more. The Steelers have numerous free agents this offseason and, like all teams, will lose some of them. Fortunately, the Steelers are in a good cap space situation (the cheap quarterback room has helped) so they have the opportunity to fill some voids.
