The Pittsburgh Steelers' quarterback situation is taking center stage this offseason. While the team has several key positions to upgrade, nothing is more important than getting the quarterback position right before the 2025 season. Russell Wilson and Justin Fields remain strong options, but Fields appears to have the edge as the more affordable, exciting long-term choice.

Steelers quarterbacks Justin Fields (#2) and Russell Wilson (#3) stretch on the field as the team gets ready to practice during Organized Team Activities at the UPMC Sports Complex in Pittsburgh, PA.

Other options could be riskier for the Steelers, but General Manager Omar Khan has shown he's not afraid to be aggressive. There may be no better example of that than pursuing a massive trade with the Los Angeles Rams for Matthew Stafford—a Super Bowl champion and expected future Hall of Famer, now 37 years old.

The Rams and Stafford find themselves in a somewhat awkward situation, which has opened the door for the Steelers to explore a trade. On Wednesday morning, NFL insider Adam Schefter appeared on The Pat McAfee Show, sharing new insights into the Stafford trade rumors. Schefter revealed that the Steelers are one of three teams currently showing serious interest this offseason.

"There's a lot of teams interested in Matthew Stafford," Schefter said. "Others have checked in [Raiders, Giants, Steelers], and others have checked in, but I view that as kind of the playing field so to speak."

The Las Vegas Raiders, New York Giants, and the Steelers appear to be the top three teams showing serious interest in trading for Stafford. The idea of the Steelers sending a bundle of assets and taking on a significant contract for Stafford is both daunting and risky. It also is a move that is very exciting to think about. It’s an idea that will continue to spark heavy debate among Steeler Nation about whether it’s a wise decision or not.

Rams' Matthew Stafford looks on during an away game.

While no one can say for sure, based on Stafford’s performance in 2024 and his career achievements, he hasn’t shown the usual signs of regression for an aging quarterback. The Steelers might view him as the best option to compete for a Super Bowl with their aging defense. While it might seem like a bold move, there’s a logic to it—though it would undoubtedly be a risky one if it happens.

In 2024, Stafford led the Rams to within a hair’s breadth of knocking off the eventual Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles. The Rams lost 28-22 in the Divisional Round of the playoffs, but had they won, they likely would have taken down the Washington Commanders next. At the very least the Rams would have given the Commanders a tough game. Stafford’s performance was stellar in that game—throwing for 324 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions against one of the league’s best defenses.

Steelers Seriously Might Trade For Matthew Stafford

That performance shows that trading for Stafford might not be the worst move for the Steelers. With TJ Watt and Cam Heyward yet to experience much postseason success, Mike Tomlin and the organization may see Stafford as their best shot at competing for Super Bowls with the current roster. The latest developments surrounding Stafford are certainly intriguing.

It’s surprising that the Rams would consider moving on from him, but the financial implications are creating a dilemma for both sides. This situation has opened up another significant opportunity for the Steelers to dramatically alter their outlook for the 2025 season. All eyes are on Khan, Art Rooney II and Tomlin to see what type of changes happen before the 2025 season gets started.
