The Pittsburgh Steelers shocked the NFL world when they traded to land superstar wide receiver DK Metcalf. Immediately, there was a wave of optimism that Pittsburgh’s offense had transformed overnight, pairing Metcalf with George Pickens to create one of the league’s most dangerous receiving duos. Fans and analysts alike envisioned a high-powered attack that could elevate the Steelers back into contention.

However, the team quickly shifted course, trading Pickens away just a month later. Through the first 10 weeks of the 2025 NFL season, Metcalf has caught 32 passes for 502 receiving yards and scored five touchdowns. While those numbers aren’t disastrous and aren’t entirely Metcalf’s fault, they fall short of the explosive production many expected when the team made the blockbuster trade. Meanwhile, Pickens has thrived with his new team, recording 49 catches for 764 yards and six touchdowns.

Early in the Week 10 contest against the Los Angeles Chargers, Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers missed Metcalf on a touchdown pass. Of course, the comparison between Metcalf and Pickens isn’t perfectly fair, as the two offenses operate in very different systems. Still, Steelers insider Ray Fittipaldo expressed concerns about Metcalf during his appearance on The North Shore Drive Podcast on Tuesday.

"The bottom line is they're paying this guy $150 million, and he's not putting up numbers like a No. 1 receiver," Fittipaldo said Tuesday on The North Shore Drive podcast. "I just think, sometimes, No. 1 receivers have to be able to beat double coverage. The only aspect that we've really seen that's been explosive is the stuff over the middle and the catch and run. Other than that, we haven't really seen a lot of No. 1 receiver qualities out of the guy through the first half of the season."

Early in the 2025 season, Steelers fans saw flashes of Metcalf’s explosiveness across the middle of the field and with the ball in his hands, but with so much focus on him, he hasn’t been able to live up to the hype of a true WR1 earning the money he makes each year.

Steelers Need DK Metcalf To Play Like A True WR1

Fittipaldo detailed why he worries that the trade hasn’t produced the offensive boost Pittsburgh envisioned, raising questions about whether Metcalf is living up to the hype in a situation that has shifted dramatically since his arrival.

"Antonio Brown did it for years," Fittipaldo said. "Ben Roethlisberger knew that Antonio Brown was going to be bracketed, but he would put it in a window, or he would put it in a place where he knew Antonio can go up and get it. And I just don't see that from DK Metcalf. Aaron [Rodgers] took the blame for that fourth-down pass in the end zone, fourth and six. He said, 'I should have looked to the other side,' or, 'I put it in a bad place.' But to me, if you watch that play, DK goes up for it and kind of puts one hand up. I'm not going to say he gives up on it, but it wasn't really like a contested catch, 50-50 ball where a receiver's going to go get it."

Fittipaldo pointed out that wide receivers earning what Metcalf makes each year need to find ways to impact games even when the secondary is keying in on them. He hasn’t seen that from Metcalf yet, and it’s starting to worry him.
